About the name “Poor Spirit”
The name “Poor Spirit” comes from the opening of Jesus Christ’s most famous sermon, the Sermon on the Mount. At the beginning of this sermon, Jesus lists the Beatitudes, which are the characteristics He wants His followers to exemplify. The first of these is in Matthew 5:3 where He says, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
The name comes from the desire and ambition to be poor in spirit, and acknowledge that only through Christ’s sacrificial death and triumphant resurrection can we have eternal life.
